Brussels, 10 June 2026 – The International Union of Property Owners is delighted to welcome two new member organisations: Bostadsrätterna from Sweden and Húseigendafélagið from Iceland. These new memberships significantly reinforce UIPI’s presence in the Nordics and further strengthen its representativeness of private property owners across Europe.
UIPI President Dr Kai Warnecke said: “Welcoming Bostadsrätterna and Húseigendafélagið comes at a crucial time when housing-related issues are becoming increasingly prominent across Europe. Property owners play a key role in Europe’s housing landscape, which remains largely in the hands of citizens and private landlords, often small, individual actors, making UIPI an indispensable partner at EU level. These memberships also reinforce our presence in Sweden alongside Villaägarna and Fastighetsägarna, and further strengthen our reach across EFTA countries.”
This enthusiasm is shared by the new members themselves. Hildur Ýr Viðarsdóttir, Chairman of the Board at Húseigendafélagið, said: “We are delighted to become a member of UIPI. We strongly believe that close cooperation and collaboration are essential to advancing the shared interests of property owners across Europe. We look forward to contributing actively to this collective effort and strengthening our partnerships within the organisation.”
Ulrika Blomqvist, Chief Executive Officer at Bostadsrätterna, added: “UIPI provides an important platform for collaboration on issues relating to property ownership and housing, and we are proud to now be a part of it.”
Both organisations bring extensive expertise in housing and real estate matters, spanning legal, technical, fiscal, and economic disciplines. With Bostadsrätterna and Húseigendafélagið officially on board, UIPI’s European network now comprises 29 national associations across 25 European countries, representing close to 7 million property owners across Europe.
Established in Stockholm in 1921, Bostadsrätterna is the oldest and largest organisation representing tenant-owned associations (bostadsrättsföreningar) in Sweden. This housing model is based on cooperative ownership, where residents own a share in an association that grants them the right to occupy their apartment. Out of 30,000 tenant-owned associations nationwide, approximately 10,000 are members of Bostadsrätterna. The non-profit organisation represents the collective interests of nearly 400,000 residents living within its member associations, adding a massive and unique segment to UIPI’s broader European representation.
Founded in 1923, Húseigendafélagið (the Icelandic Homeowners Association) is a non-profit, membership-based NGO dedicated to safeguarding the interests of property owners and landlords in Iceland. As the only association of its kind in the country, it brings together approximately 10,000 members, including owners of detached houses, apartments, and commercial real estate, as well as private landlords. Its inclusion provides Icelandic property owners with a direct pathway to the European policy stage.
