UIPI welcomes the nomination of Dan Jørgensen as EU Commissioner for Housing and Energy

The International Union of Property Owners (UIPI), representing property owners across Europe, welcomes the nomination of Dan Jørgensen as the European Commissioner for Housing and Energy. While it was widely expected that this portfolio might focus more heavily on housing and social affairs, the appointment of Jørgensen —given his strong background in climate and energy policies— signals a logical continuation of the European Commission’s focus on the intersection of housing and the energy transition.

The communication on promoting housing affordability in the EU, soon to be published, and the New Affordable Housing Plan expected within the first 100 days should set the direction and identify key actions involving various Directorate-Generals of the Commission (DGs). UIPI hopes that a comprehensive and coordinated approach to address the complex challenges facing the housing and building sectors will be guaranteed within the existing limited EU competences on the matter. A fully coordinated approach is essential to address the complex challenges facing the sector.

UIPI’s Secretary General, Emmanuelle Causse, comments: “Amid rising living costs, increasing requirements for sustainable and energy-efficient buildings, and the pressing need for more affordable housing, it is critical that Commissioner Jørgensen’s leadership promotes policies that encourage sustainable construction, renovation, and retrofitting while carefully balancing costs to ensure affordability is not compromised. We expect future initiatives to protect the interests of property owners while ensuring that housing remains accessible to all Europeans.”

UIPI remains committed to constructive collaboration with the European Commission, ensuring that the voices of property owners are heard, and that housing and building policies reflect the realities on the ground—promoting a housing market that is affordable, sustainable, and resilient for all.

About UIPI

The International Union of Property Owners (UIPI), the largest pan-European non-profit association of both home owners and private landlords. UIPI comprises 31 organisations from 28 countries, which, jointly, represent more than 5 million private property owners and around 25 million dwellings all over Europe.

The interests of the sector we represent correspond to the concerns and needs of a substantial part of the European population. As shown by Eurostat, almost 70% of EU citizens are owner-occupiers, whereas almost another 20% of the population is housed in the private rented sector.
