Building the Future of Student Housing in Europe

On 6 May 2026, stakeholders from across Europe gathered in Milan for the HOME² final conference: Building the Future of Student Housing in Europe. Hosted at Politecnico di Milano, this event marked the culmination of a journey that began with the HousErasmus+ Project in 2016. Today, HOME’s work has translated into practical tools and recommendations, from verified student accommodation accessible via the Erasmus+ App to shared quality benchmarks that promote safety, accessibility, and international friendliness.

Building the Future of Student Housing in Europe brought together a broad range of participants, from universities and student representatives to public authorities, housing operators, and EU-level policymakers and stakeholders. Through discussion and exchange, participants explored how cooperation across sectors can be strengthened.

The event presented the concluding outputs of the HOME² project, including housing quality criteria and strategic recommendations aimed at European decision-makers drawn from extensive research and stakeholder consultation carried out across multiple European countries. The conference also featured a selection of initiatives identified through the “European Call for Best Practices” demonstrating how different regions and actors are responding to challenges such as affordability, social inclusion, and innovation in student accommodation.

UIPI took the stage in the conference to present the findings of the study The private student housing market in Europe: Trends, challenges & perspectives published earlier this 2026 and discussed how policymakers can effectively support both landlords and tenants in creating a healthy student accommodation sector.
