UIPI welcomes the new European Commission

UIPI welcomes the new European Commission

PRESS RELEASE

28 November 2024
Brussels, Belgium

The International Union of Property Owners (UIPI), representing 31 associations across 28 countries in Europe, congratulates Mr. Dan Jørgensen on his confirmation hearing as EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing. UIPI welcomes the growing recognition of housing as an important topic at the EU level, alongside energy, and looks forward to contributing to both policy areas.

Today, the European Parliament has given its green light to the new structure of the European Commission, thus approving the new team of Commissioners. UIPI welcomes this vote and remains engaged in advancing EU endeavours to create tangible and inclusive approaches across all policies related to the housing sector.

UIPI appreciates the increasing acknowledgment of housing as a priority issue at EU level for this new legislative term. Over 70% of Europeans live in homes owned by themselves or their parents, with ownership rates being even higher in Eastern and Southern Europe. Meanwhile, nearly 20% of the population depends on the private rental sector, making our input vital to housing discussions. As such, UIPI looks forward to working together with President Von der Leyen’s new team, notably: Dan Jørgensen, first-ever commissioner for Housing, Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms and Roxana Mînzatu, Executive Vice-President for People, Skills and Preparedness, to better streamline policies that impact property owners while respecting the national and local competences that govern the housing sector.

Emmanuelle Causse, UIPI Secretary General stated: “UIPI is fully committed to supporting EU initiatives for practical and inclusive housing solutions, working closely on the European Affordable Housing Plan and with the European Commission Task Force on Housing. We are also eager to engage in constructive dialogue with the new Commissioners to further advance these vital efforts”.

With the new College of Commissioners officially taking seat as of 1 December, the European Affordable Housing Plan is expected to be published within the first 100 days.
